Run Minneapolis: Kasota, SE Como Marcy Holmes, & Seward

Highway 280 Entrance Ramp at Kasota

Carly dropped me off at Kasota and Highway 280 on Saturday for a one-way route from there home through SE Como, the U of MN, Augsburg College, and the Seward Neighborhood.

Heading East, to the South is a massive train yard that separates the Como neighborhood from Prospect Park. It’s home to many warehouses, including a Home Depot lumber distribution center and this food warehouse:

Kasota eventually turns into Elm, which runs toward the U of MN with SE Como neighoborhood homes on the North side of the road:

Elm Street

Some of our local ABC owned radio stations seem to be based along here:

92 KQRS 93X and LOVE 105 Offices

This particular area of SE Como feels like student slums with outdoor couches, beer bottles in yards, and graffiti.

Bunge Building

This sign explains how to bike to Barley John’s (sort of):

I worked my way through the Van Cleve Community Center then past the Bunge tower (in the background) where a new condo development is going up:

I followed Como Ave SE until I hit 35W, then took a left on what turns into 10th St. That took me into the Marcy Holmes neighborhood, which prides itself on being Minneapolis’ first neighborhood. They play up the Stone Arch Bridge, downtown fireworks, and local graffiti on their sign:

Then I hit what I consider to be the secondary frat row of the U of MN. The main being on University Ave. Here are the houses:

Theta Tau House

Sigma Alpha Mu House

Kappa Kappa Gamma House

Then I crossed the Mississippi on the 10th St Bridge and got this shot of the 35W bridge over the churning river with the Minneapolis skyline in the background:

The same bridge facing the U of MN:

I passed through the East bank of the U of MN then onto Augsburg College’s campus:

Where I saw the tower that’s visible from I-94:

And a guy practicing corner kicks:

I turned South on 25th Ave S and saw the Bethany Lutheran Church at Franklin Ave:

Followed by the Emmanuel Tabernacle Church a couple blocks later:

25th runs into a warehouse, so I looped around onto 24th St E heading West where I peaked down historic Milwaukee Avenue S:

And 22nd Ave S:

Then I headed East on 25th past the Eagles Club:

Skol Liquors:

Matthew’s Park:

The now-closed Cliquot Club Cafe:

The open and awesome Birchwood Cafe:

And then took a right on 38th Ave S which took me through Brackett Park. At 29th St, I headed East past Bread of Life Lutheran Church for the Deaf:

And First Free Methodist Church:

Then I headed for home along 45th and passed Hiawatha-Lake Auto Uphostery:

Hia-Lake Auto Upholstery

This place has clearly been there for a long time and has outlasted a ton of other automotive related businesses along E Lake Street from the time when E Lake St was home to many car dealers. This spot, being less than two blocks from the river, has the potential for something significant should they ever decide to sell.

  1. You passed thru 2 of my former hoods… the “student slums” which I LOVE (enough to have lived in 3 different homes there) and Milwaukee Ave S.

9 miles, you’re getting up there!
