#Vikings Use Metrodome Rent-Free. Wilf Demands More $ from Public. #wilfare

@edkohler I dispute the validity of anything that comes from your crock of lies. But I do give you props for lying using your real name.

I have a hard time understanding why @SaveTheVikesOrg’s Cory Merrifield has such a hard time understanding straight up black and white facts related to the current sweetheart deal the Vikings have at the Metrodome or the demands the Vikings are making on the public to give them an even better deal at the public’s expense.

For example, back in November, I tweet this to @Suspiciouskilla:

@Suspiciouskilla The point is that we have a paid-for stadium that the Vikings use rent-free, so why build another one?

Which drew a response from Merrifield:

@edkohler @suspiciouskilla heres another lie. The Viking do not use the Metrodome "rent free". The majority of Dome operations paid by Vikes

Merrifield sure sounds confident in his accusation. Was I wrong? Let’s look at the black and white facts to decide. Here is the METROPOLITAN SPORTS FACILITIES COMMISSION YEAR 2011 BUDGET AND REPORT ON USER FEE CHARGES (PDF).

Page 3:

METROPOLITAN SPORTS FACILITIES COMMISSION YEAR 2011 BUDGET AND REPORT ON USER FEE CHARGES

Here’s what I see:

2008
Rent: $4,058,273
Less: Facilities cost credit/rent forbearance: ($4,058,273)

2009
Rent: $3,611,745
Less: Facilities cost credit/rent forbearance: ($3,611,745)

2010 Amended Budget
Rent: $4,654,000
Less: Facilities cost credit/rent forbearance: ($4,654,000)

2010 Projection
Rent: $4,654,000
Less: Facilities cost credit/rent forbearance: ($4,654,000)

2011 Recommended Budget
Rent: $3,967,000
Less: Facilities cost credit/rent forbearance: ($3,967,000)

Every year, there is a line item for rent.

Every year, there is a line item for forgiving the rent charges.

This is not a grey area. It’s black and white.

For Cory Merrifield to call me a liar regarding a straight up black and white objective issue like this goes to show how far removed he is from the reality based community.

In my world, I believe that two people can agree upon a set of facts while disagreeing on what should be done about those facts. This is a position from which good public policy has a chance of being formed.

But, in documented liar, Cory Merrifield’s world, people speaking in factual terms that don’t support your corporate welfare agenda must be attacked for, well, speaking the truth. This is not the path to sound public policy, and should be rejected by our elected officials.

The reality of Minnesota’s current NFL stadium situation is that we have a team that plays rent-free in the Metrodome, yet wants the public to borrow $650,000,000 to build a 21,000 car parking lot in Arden Hills (along with a stadium) where the team can charge for parking, pocket money from naming rights, and pocket revenue from personal seat licenses while the public makes annual debt payments of $50 million per year.

  1. Out of curiosity, has this Cory Merrifield talked about all the Viking and new stadium creating local “jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs …”?

Probably not since his Linkedin page indicates he’s an account manager with a firm, “We provide a comprehensive set of services to support IT outsourcing needs – on-site, off-site or offshore.”

I had not thought of offshore outsourcing the Vikings, the what, Tokyo Vikings; Nanking Vikings.

No, the Bangalore Vikings, of course. Where the outsourcing dream began.

Making a name for himself is all I see.

Where’s the real harm if Zygi makes good on his offer we can’t refuse, and it’s the Little Rock Vikings? So? Cory found by building manager three days after hanging himself in his firm’s broom closet?

    Unlikely.

  2. Have to add – that crock of lies thing – it reminds me of the youngster being told to eat the entire plate contents, “Think of all the starving people in China.” The response, “Name one.”

I have read a lot of what you posted. If there’s a “crock of lies,” you’d expect Cory could name one.

But, he’s not into facts, for facts sake.

He’s into bald assertions, for Zygi’s sake. Hopefully Zygi feels the love.
