Entries for February, 2011

Fairmont Vancouver Airport TP

Why stay at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport? 1. It’s 2 minutes from International departures. 2. They have telescopes in the rooms overlooking the airport, so you can check out the action on the tarmac in crazy detail (and watch people lounging at their gates across the way). 3. They do a damn fine job with [...]

Brown Air Over St. Paul

It’s always fun to check out the Twin Cities during a flight arrival at MSP. However, it’s a bit less cool when I pass through a thick layer of brown air on the way in like I did today around 1pm. The shot above has Mendota in the foreground (coming in over Ft. Snelling from [...]

Five 5-Star Movies #3

Here are five more movies that I’ve rated 5-Stars on Netflix: Run for Your Life – The history of the founding of the New York City Marathon and the charismatic founder, Fred Lebow. It’s truly amazing to think about how difficult it must have been to start such a major event in a city of [...]

North Minneapolis Blog Wars & Minneapolis Public Schools

It’s been a busy day in the North Minneapolis blog fight scene. Sheila Regan has a great round-up of the action at the TC Daily Planet. Strangely, Don Allen (of Poopgate fame) threatened to sue Sheila if she wrote about what bloggers are blogging about. If I blog about what a journalist wrote about bloggers, [...]

I Was Duped by a Commenter

Sadly, a first time commenter on The Deets yesterday commented under a fake name that was a close impersonation of another local community member. I was duped. Another commenter brought the issue to my attention. Thank you. This sort of thing bums me out. Why would someone think it’s okay to impersonate someone else in [...]

Squirrels are to Nuts as Ed is to Cokes

While spectating at the City of Lakes Loppet Skijoring event on Saturday, I purchased a hot dog and a Coke from the Devine Swine catering tent. The Coke was warm, so I cached it in a snowbank, then forgot about it. Two days later, I remembered and found it. Did I pass the squirrel test?

Don Allen, Poopgate, and $15,000 from Minneapolis Schools

Johnny Northside has uncovered an interesting line item in a Minneapolis Schools contract where Don Allen is scheduled to receive $15,000 for some form of video production work. This seems strange, considering the quality of work Don Allen publishes on his blog (it’s called the Independent Business News Network, but he hosts it at donny-allen.us). [...]

Green Bay from Up in the Air

My flight from Toronto to MSP on Friday night followed Highway 29 home. It’s quite a bit quicker by air than driving. For example, the pilots didn’t have to keep an eye out for deer. As you can probably tell from the photo, Packer fans were busy stocking up on last minute Super Bowl supplies, [...]

Sheraton Sunnyvale, California TP

Aaron sent in this shot in November of 2009, so it’s not clear whether the Sheraton has stuck with soft doubles. Aaron is currently a bit further west than Sunnyvale these days (Honolulu), where the TP smells like pineapples (maybe).

Theme is Hosed Up

Something is hosed up with my site’s theme that’s keeping pages from loading properly. I’ve switched back to the default for now. It may be this way for a while because I’m wrist deep in poutine this week. They even serve the stuff at the golf dome up here
