I recently took at look at what Mexican restaurants are most popular with Urbanspoon users in the Twin Cities to see what people seem to be enjoying these days. I’ve included the top-75 below.
Why 75? It turns out that the reality based, quisling community has 74 restaurants that they enjoy more than the first Mexican restaurant owned by Minnesota’s master of false outrage.

My personal recommendation: Check out Lake Street in Minneapolis. From Uptown to the Mississippi River, there are a ton of authentic, delicious, Mexican restaurants that kick some serious butt.
Ed–El Parian is quite excellent in Eagan. Make sure to ask for their hotter salsas though–the basic stuff they bring out tastes a little like tomato sauce.
@Kirk, I like your local knowledge. Driving from Lake St to Eagan for Mexican food seems a little off, but I’m willing to give it a shot.
We need to do a Lake St taco tour. Maybe it could replace the Blizzard Pub Crawl this winter. I know Taylor would be in.
hmm, tacos.
Chipolte and Qdoba? Seriously?
At least La Cucharacha did not make the list. That would have been sadder than Taco John’s and Taco Bell.
Chipotle and Qdoba is better than Zantigo. Zantigo is just Taco Bell, but with green chili.
I just had dinner at Taqueria La Hacienda on Lake and Clinton. It is my second favorite taqueria in Minneapolis. Al Pastor is their specialty and so good.
Can I just say how awesome it is that Dora’s made #5? Especially since it closed last year.
I was trying to help Dora with some online marketing to keep the restaurant afloat, but it just wasn’t enough. Maybe this is proof my efforts were at least doing something.
Sad to see it go. That was the first restaurant I’ve been a regular at. Dora would start making a quesadilla for my daughter as soon as we walked in the door. So good.
While not in Minneapolis / St Paul if you are out in Elk River, please check out Mucho Loco which just opened in Elk River. The food is awesome! Best i’ve had in years and I eat alot of Mexican food. The margaritas and atmosphere are great as well but oh the food đŸ™‚ What I like is that food like the Chimichanga’s typically heavy are fairly light at least the tortilla is. The cheese sauce is excellent and the sides of beans or rice are extremely well done. Glad to have this new restaurant opening in Elk River Minnesota. They are located in the mall near Applebee’s and the old Target. In the space where the Hirschfields used to be.
Is one Chipotle really all that different from another? Why is the one in Apple Valley #9 while the one in Merriam Park/Highland Park #59. I suppose if you live in Apple Valley, Chipotle may be the best Mexican you can find.
This is why you can’t trust a vote, things like La Casita and Qdoba and Chipotle make it on the list. If those represent the best Mexican you’ve ever had I feel sad for you.
Chipotle? Say it ain’t so.
Spot on with Rancho Grande in Buffalo at #4, it’s truly south of the border solid. If you head out west on 55, hit it up, you won’t be disappointed. Heck, you can even holler at me to meet you for a beer.
@Aaron, I’ll work on a Rancho Grande road trip plan.
Good list! Will keep it handy.
I don’t get this reference: Minnesota’s master of false outrage. Who is that?
@jane, the “master of false outrage” is the current head of the MN GOP, Tony Sutton, who happens to also be the CEO of the Baja Sol restaurant franchise.
I’m a big fan of authentic Mexican food and recently discovered Cooperativa Mercado Central. This is definitely one of the best Mexican restaurants in the Twin Cities. After living in Minneapolis for most of my life we’re making a move to the suburbs this month which is going to make finding a local Mexican place pretty challenging. Why is it that Chipotle seems to be the only Mexican restaurant people in the burbs seem to enjoy. Come on people, open your minds a bit.
