You Can Lease Solar Panels in Minnesota

Maria Energia has a look at a local company, freEner-g , that’s leases solar power panels.
As I understand it, you end up paying a fixed monthly cost for the panels and depending on your power consumption and solar exposure, may be able to drop your electricity bill to zero. In fact, I think it can go negative if you’re contributing more energy to the grid than you consume.

Please remember your cost goes up 1.05 or 5% a year.

Brett – “your cost” – are you talking about current Xcel rates, or the lease agreement?
As far as I can tell, the lease is for a fixed price per month for 15 years. My 2.5kW array will make about 3MWh in a year, or about $300 of electricity. A 2.3kW array is leased for $32/month, or $384 a year, for the next 15 years. I’d say that’s a pretty good hedge.
(I assume you were talking about Xcel bills going up 5% a year…)
