Under your own example the user who keeps &quot;the StarTribune open in one of their browser’s tabs overnight so they can check the weather first thing in the morning&quot; will be getting last nights news if the homepage isn&#039;t refreshed.

I&#039;m not saying that news media publishers don&#039;t milk this, but your assertion that there is &quot;This provides no added value to visitors (in fact, it makes the sites less usable in many cases)&quot; is wrong.</description>
