Sick of GOP Fundraising Calls? Blame Erik Paulsen’s Campaign Finance Chair, Dan Rice

Strategic FundraisingIf you’re receiving calls from 202-652-4583 you’re getting called by Strategic Fundraising, an Oakdale, Minnesota company run by Erik Paulsen’s campaign finance chair, Dan Rice.

Four years ago, a “friend” of mine signed me up to be a some sort of campaign captain for the RNC as a prank. Fun stuff. That had some benefits, such as receiving a nice photo of George & Laura Bush for my fridge.

Of course, it came with some side effects too, such as ending up on the email lists of national and state campaigns from coast to coast.

It also generated fundraising phone calls from the RNC, including some recent calls from a Washington, DC based number: 202-652-4583

The Founder and “Chief Fundraising Officer” for Strategic Fundraising is Dan Rice. He he’s not dialing for dollars, he currently serves as the campaign finance chair for 3rd District Republican candidate Erik Paulsen (note: while Paulsen is running as a Republican, he uses that radioactive only once proactively on his website).

Dan Rice’s previous political contributions include:

Mr. Daniel P Rice (Strategic Communications/President), (Zip code: 55042) $25000 to NATIONAL REPUBLICAN CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEE on 06/05/07

MR. DAN RICE (SELF-EMPLOYED/STRATEGIC FUNDRAISING), (Zip code: 55042) $2300 to JOHN MCCAIN 2008 INC. on 03/29/07

Mr. Daniel P. Rice (Strategic Fundraising/President), (Zip code: 56042) $2300 to FRIENDS OF ERIK PAULSEN on 10/15/07

Dan Rice (Strategic Fundraising Inc./CEO), (Zip code: 55042) $500 to JIM KNOBLACH FOR CONGRESS on 03/30/06

If you find yourself on Strategic Fundraising’s list and would like to make the calls stop, fill out this form on their site. It turns out that they’re not legally required to stop harassing you on behalf of their non-profit and political clients but are smart enough to realize that they gain nothing by calling people who don’t want to be called. A smart business decision.

Calls for local fundraising efforts run by Strategic Fundraising may come from 651-379-0100 or 763-392-5981

Other Strategic Fundraising numbers you may see on your caller ID include:

202-652-2659
573-636-7326
602-388-8058
651-209-3272

Interestingly, Strategic Fundraising – just like Erik Paulsen – seems to be distancing itself from the currently radioactive term, “Republican.” For example, here is how Strategic Fundraising used to describe their business back in 2000:

Strategic Fundraising

Now, the only mention of the term “Republican” on STI’s site comes in a press release from April:

Springfield Professional Fundraiser Hits $2 Million Milestone

The radioactive term is used only once proactively on Erik Paulsen’s campaign site.

Erik Paulsen for Congress - Republican

“Republican” is used in a few reprinted news stories but only once directly by the campaign back when Erik Paulsen announced his candidacy on January 27, 2008.

Also, it’s worth noting that Strategic Fundraising has done more than raise money for the RNC and GOP candidates across the country. They’ve also engaged in push-polling where polling questions are designed to manipulate candidate perceptions through misleading statements.

By the way, if you decide to take a call from Strategic Fundraising, try responding to every solicitation with “I don’t think I can contribute that much at this time.” It’s amazing to watch the responses back with lower and lower contribution requests until they reach the point of saying, “can we send you a letter to remind you to contribute when you can?” Good humor.

  1. What a beautiful relationship…Erik pays Dan…Dan sends another check to Erik, and then another to the RNC, so they can help Erik run another attack ad!

  2. Interesting information about the legal requirements. I’d always thought that organizations were required to stop calling when requested to do so. Maybe the regs vary from state to state?
