Cheap Local Sporting Events

Dad by Dawn has a solid list of local sports worth checking out since they’re cheap compared to professional sporting events:

- St. Paul Curling Club
- Robert Emmets Hurling Club
- Minnesota Rugby Union
- MN Freeze Australian Rules Football
- MUSA Kickball

Great stuff. I’d add most high school sports to the list. As I type this, I can see the Minnehaha Academy High School soccer team training for their upcoming season. You may have to pay for some sports, like football in Eden Prairie, but many are free with much better access than what you’ll get at a pro game.

And don’t forget competitions our our local roads such as biking, running, or inline skating. All can be exciting and they often have post-race events worth checking out.

What would you add?

MN Rollergirls can be fun to watch. It’s not free, but it’s cheap ($10-12, I think) compared to crappy T-Wolve tickets that are still a fortune.

Town Ball. Parks all over the metro area and state have great baseball leagues. And I think they are free. Players are typically post HS and can be quite good.

There is a great book on the subject as well. Town Ball: The Glory Days of Minnesota Amateur Baseball

Minneapolis Community and Technical College Basketball would be my addition to the list. Both the Women’s and Men’s teams are generally highly ranked, and they play doubleheaders for $5.
