It's simply part and parcel of how redneck southerners think. I'm not saying all soutehrners are dumb rednecks, but evidently the cheering crowd he was addressing would qualify as such. He's playing into the hillbilly voters who want a "down home" guy who is "one of them." An "I'll tell you what, you can stick that there pole where the sun don't shine there sonny boy" type of candidate. He's talkin' stupid to garner respect and votes from a bunch idiots. The fact is he would never say anything of the sort to anybody that objected to the flag. And its sad a presidential candidate would speak in such a manner at all. Certainly doesn't make him sound like a pragmatic problem solver. In fact this is similar to the type of that's-the-way-it-is because I said so, and if you disagree-with-me you're-a-terrorist BS we've been getting from GW for years. But its just sly politiking for Huckabee: he knows that's what those dips**ts down there want to hear.

Which raises another question: Can we trust somebody who changes his message and the way he talks based on who he's talking to? That's like when Hillary was speaking in the south a while back and suddenly had a southern accent. I'll give my vote to the candidate that says what he means, means what he says, delivers it in the same invigorated, eloquent, inspiring, and educated voice of reason everytime.
OBAMA '08 BABY!!!!!!!!!!

I think it's more telling that Huckabee's response to those who may be offended by the Confederate flag is to imply bodily harm. He shows a total lack of respect for people that understandably see the flag as a sign of slavery and oppression. There are plenty of people who take pride in that flag for reasons not at all related to oppression, and if Huckabee is acknowledging that, I think that's fine. The flag means many things to many people, and one valid thing it means is pride in your region. It's like flying a Packers flag from your green pickup to a lot of people. But denying that this flag justifiably causes other people pain, and furthermore, wishing to inflict further pain on those offended, is WORSE than irresponsible. It's bigoted, and it's calculated. Apparently the populist vote he's aiming for includes only one skin color. Happy MLK Day.

Fair point, Zelltron, but it's a slightly different point that I raised in my post.

When a Republican presidential candidate goes to South Carolina and starts talking about defending the Confederate flag in the name of states rights, there is really only one meaning.

Wow, really? I don't think it's a fair assumption to make that all people who like seeing Confederate flags flown to be bigots.
