Not safe? I bet you were totally attentive in your hypermiling mindset.
I turned things up a few notches on the way back from Chigaco and got my average up to 15.6 MPG. That’s more than a 10% increase in fuel economy. I’ll write up the tactics some other time.

I averaged 13.8 MPG to Madison, but put a few hypermiling strategies to work between Madison & Chicago to up my average to 14.0 (all highway).

What I mean concerning “not very safe” is that my car doesn’t like steering much with the engine off.
